I'm guessing the tiny font has something to do with framebuffer
consoles. I don't know what size of console font you use, nor what
size your screen is, but perhaps enabling something in the
CONFIG_FONT_SUPPORT area of the kernel (with one or more of the
fonts), OR adding something like "video=1024x768" (or 800x600, or
whatever) to the boot args mught help. On one of my boxes I pass
that video=1024x768, between 'root=' and 'ro', so that I can read
an 8x16 font on a 1600x1200 screen (the other desktops use 12x22,
as does my netbook if I want to read things comfortably)

For dhcpcd I have no suggestions - I use dhclient. Similarly, no
suggestions if it is actually a problem in bringing up the wifi in
userspace.
