I agree. I sometimes think the Gnome developers have gone mad.
FWIW, I've been happy with icewm:
which is great about not loading down the hardware, but it's best to
configure it using the text config files as the graphical config
interface is not very good.
I also like Claws mail:
although I've heard good things about Thunderbird.
