I've done a chmod 4711 /opt/kde/kppp
-rws--x--x    1 root     root       710502 Jan 27 08:34 kppp

This didn't solve the problem. What file exactly did you mean?

maybe this has something to do with me running 2.6.1 with module init-tools 
(see below)

P.S. Here's some output from my sys.log
