The thing is that everything is fine with 4496 and the RIVA driver
compiled into the kernel.  Everything I have tried with 5336 results in
blank VTs.

I did too, I'm spoiled now.

As I said previously in this thread, I have gotten used to whatever
vga=793 (or whatever, I'm not at home 1600x1200?) gives me, and I'm
certainly not happy with 80x60.  I have tried various configuration
permutations, and have got nowhere, I'm prepared to put this to one
side for now.  I'm not quite sure where the problem lies, and am not
ready to invest the effort attempting to fix the problem until I have
moved to 2.6 and it becomes apparent there.
