no german umlauts after login via agetty

i seem to have yet another problem with german umlauts.
when logging in from agetty, i don´t get the umlauts,
but when i enter a new shell
everything´s fine (well, almost... but first things first!)
which is a bit annoying. could it be a problem with the timing?
variables read too late? but then -- i copied the sysv-style bootscript
and didn´t meddle with it.
what i did so far:
i followed the installation procedure of lfs 4.1 rather strictly, the
kernel has got the default charset, which should do nicely for german. i
i installed an /etc/inputrc containing
set input-meta on
set output-meta on
set meta-convert-meta off
(stole it from debian, but found it in the lfs-archive, too)
and set LANG and LC_CTYPE to de_DE in /etc/profile.
there are no configuration files in my home directory.
