perl WARNINGS about locale?

Just built an LFS box with CVS.. and now anything I do with perl gives me:
perl: warning: setting locale failed.
perl: warning: Please check that your locale settings:
      LANGUAGE=(unset)

  are supported and installed on your system.

what in the hell did I screw up?
