I found the solution. The configure command for db 4.0.14 in the cvs 
blfs book should be:

../dist/configure --prefix=/usr --enable-compat185 \
  --enable-cxx --enable-java

Maybe a note should be added to the oo installation instructions that 
db-4.0.14 should be recompiled with the 2 additional switches? Or does 
a patch exist for this?
