sane + alsa

Or the more simple is making a backup of your 
modules/2.4.19/kernel/drivers/sound/ directory before re-installing the
kernel, and after installing the modules putting it back to its place. 
(At least, it works if I you don't make big changes in your menuconfig
--eg., it always worked for me.)
