Offhand I'd say 8Mb, but it would be unpleasant to run it in less than
16Mb.  If you couldn't get it to start in a machine which had 32Mb of
RAM I would suggest you take a look at /var/log/XFree86.0.log and see
what's _really_ making the server bail out--it's not for lack of RAM.
