ppp weirdness

hello everyone!

this is a weird one...

i've installed pppd. using kppp, i activate the connection.

upon activating the connection, the kppp shell reports the following error:

	could not find device ppp0

it connects to the server. i can ping / traceroute to the gateway server. netstat -nr shows a routing table that looks ok ( shows ppp0 bound to the correct gateway on the default route ). ifconfig shows ppp0 with a new IP address. netstat -i shows an active connection.

in checking ifcfg-ppp0, i see it is bound to /dev/ttyS0. /dev/modem points to this file ( the kppp setup looks ok ).

however, i cannot get out of the machine with anything besides ping or traceroute. it is not possible to browse using lynx or netscape
( destination unreachable, but i cannot see a problem with the routing tables ).

i'm still scratching my head on this one...any ideas?

thanks,

tom
