is startkde in your path?  on mine, its installed in /opt/kde2

also, you must put KDEDIR=/opt/kde2 in your profile somewhere and then
EXPORT KDEDIR in there as well.

/opt/kde2/bin must be in your path so that x knows where it is...

You need at least kdelibs, kdesupport, and kdebase I believe to have a
functional kde.
