I missed a gnome-settings-daemon call in gui/.  A new patch has been posted:

http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/~dj/gdm-2.26.1-fixes-2.patch

However, with both of those issues fixed at the source, I still do not 
have icons on the greeter.  Nor does a current build with the symlinks 
fix it.
