Randy, two things about swig. I've built the svn swig bindings. In
fact, I use the perl ones daily through git-svn. Also, you don't have
to build all the languages to build swig. They're only needed to run
the test suite and at runtime. So, you can build swig just on the C
libraries. It just installs data to /usr/share/swig. No linking except
C/C++ is done on /usr/bin/swig.

$ ldd /usr/bin/swig
        linux-gate.so.1 =>  (0xb7f1c000)
        libstdc++.so.6 => /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6 (0xb7e24000)
        libgcc_s.so.1 => /usr/lib/libgcc_s.so.1 (0xb7e19000)
        libc.so.6 => /lib/libc.so.6 (0xb7cd9000)
        libm.so.6 => /lib/libm.so.6 (0xb7cb3000)
        /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0xb7f1d000)
