I see. Thanks for the clarification. I was unaware of xterms problems 
with locales because I use the Gnome Terminal.

cat /usr/share/applications/gedit.desktop

That works perfectly in a gnome terminal but in an xterm I get some very 
odd output because I don't have luit installed.
