Randy, thanks for the reply.  Was a stupid error on my part...well two 
errors in this case.  Sorry for the noise.  First I misidentified the 
error that was staring me strait in the face...couldn't find xft!  Take 
notice that this has absolutely nothing to do with pango!  I have no 
idea why I thought pango.  Anyway, while PKG_CONFIG_PATH was set, it was 
not exported.  I set variables and export them separately, I had the 
export line commented out in ~/bash_profile...and of course, echo 
$PKG_CONFIG_PATH did return a vaild search path.  Anyway...false alarm.
