    export CFLAGS="-O2 -march=i686 -fomit-frame-pointer -w"
    ./configure --prefix=/usr --with-GCOPTS="$CFLAGS" -noninteractive
    make

Tried it with your flags and that works too.
    export CFLAGS='-Os -s'
    ./configure --with-GCOPTS="$CFLAGS"
    make
