Hmm.. We should probably just add a warning about this to the main text:

Something like:

"If a package doesn't compile with CFLAGS and CXXFLAGS set, unset them
and recompile from a fresh source tree"

Actually, I'd like that to be part of a larger optimizations page in
chapter 02.

Does that sound OK?
