Hate to post this in two different messages, but what's done is done.

>From the log, I can see that there are gnome specific binaries installed, and 
the configure run seemed to have checked for gnome, but I zapped the log 
before I could look at it.  I don't know if more would be installed by 
passing --with-gnome, but everything used in gnome would seem to be present...
