Well, setting a password does not work if the kernel
virtual file systems are not mounted. I get:
root:/# passwd
Changing password for root
Enter the new password (minimum of 5 characters)
Please use a combination of upper and lower case letters and numbers.
Bad password: too short.
Warning: weak password (enter it again to use it anyway).
passwd: password changed.

That's why I added mounting the virtual files as a first step.

I noticed you did not mention rc.site. That file has been
added since those instructions were written.

I do not want to fight for my version (and actually I prefer
more spacing too), but I propose to account for
the two points above.
