I forgot to follow up. Because the Makefile is called again with sudo,
which discards the environment variables, it doesn't work for most
cases. So, the patch only looks pretty and doesn't actually do much.
I should read the archives, but, why sudo? It seems you could get the
same effect by saying that you must run the Makefile as root and then
dropping privileges with su as necessary. And that would remove any
necessity on having to enter passwords later.
