Exactly.  That's why it needs to be very well designed and thought out 
from the outset.  If we need to change the protocol (e.g. to support new 
features) then it has to be done very carefully in order to not affect 
existing clients.  Subversion appears to handle such things in a 
reasonably effective manner.
