Not really, sometimes its just that the compile
time dependencies aren't handled that great.

Most packages are fine ( I often use -j 8 across my openmosix + distcc
cluster ) others have some minor issues (second or third pass finishes the
job) others just b0rk.

You can't blame the codebase, only make and the packages build
framework.
