> /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lexpat

Usually there is a symlink pointing to the real lib.  such as
libexpat.0 -> libexpat.1.7.2 or so on.  It may be best in your case to
just install expat in a more conventional way.
 ./configure --prefix=/usr && make && make install  That way everything
will be set up for you.
