Really? i could write a backend in C or C++ and it would *never* touch a
shell.

Sure, if i used system() which is really just exec() calling /bin/sh -c
it would, but if i stayed away from that it would work fine.

And the only command that would really be needed to be run from exec()
would be make, ./configure scripts, and anything that is in
<system_command>.

Now i can't speak for how perl works, but i'm assuming it's something
similar.
