Alternative location sounds good to me, but how about just:

<unpack>
    <archive>
        /usr/src/packages/ed-0.2.tar.bz2
        ftp://ftp.linuxfromscratch.org/lfs-packages/3.1/ed-0.2.tar.bz2
    </archive>

    <destination>/usr/src</destination>
</unpack>

Or at least something like:

<unpack>
    <archive type="local">
        /usr/src/packages/ed-0.2.tar.bz2
    </archive>

    <archive type="remote">
        ftp://ftp.linuxfromscratch.org/lfs-packages/3.1/ed-0.2.tar.bz2
    </archive>

    <destination>/usr/src</destination>
</unpack>

if we what to distinguish local and remote locations.

I don't thing that we need a new element for the same (more or less) thing?
